Issue 9 is the eighth issue of Bitter Root and was published July 8, 2020. The ninth issue is included in the second collected edition, Bitter Root: Rage & Redemption.

    Synopsis[edit]

“Rage & Redemption,” Part Four While searching for Adro, the Sangerye family find themselves trapped in a southern town full of jinoo that want them dead. Meanwhile, in New York, Blink faces a horror beyond imagination. Sylvester realizes the true nature of Adro, but will he survive long enough to do anything about it?[1]

    Plot Summary[edit]

At the Sangerye establishment, a policeman talks with Ma Etta. He tells her that he never believed the stories his grandmother told him when he was younger about monsters and Jinoo; perhaps if he had believed her he would've been in a better place to fight them and defend the residents of Harlem. Etta tells him that he shouldn't dwell on that as despite her extensive knowledge and encounters with the Jinoo, even she hasn't seen this type of monster before.

Meanwhile, Ford, Nora Sangerye and Cullen Sangerye arrive at Hopeville but find this bombarded by Jinoo; they find themselves locked within a church. They have, however, been separated from Berg, and they believe that Jonnie-Ray Knox has abandoned them. Ford, however, maintains that Jonnie-Ray is with them and has not deserted them, but the others are reluctant to believe him. In reality, Jonnie-Ray has taken it upon himself to return to the truck for weapons and the serums. On his way, he encounters Enoch's little pets and brings them back with him.

After realising the grave mistake he had made siding with Adro, Doctor Sylvester flees with numerous members of the town in Georgia. Adro quickly realises the plan and tries to follow them, however, and the father of the lynched boy sacrifices himself to give the others a chance to get away. Unfortunately, the only place for them to go is into Hopeville, where they find many more Jinoo.

Despite being warned to stay in Harlem by Ma Etta, Blink manages to persuade Enoch to accompany her to Chinatown on a mission. Enoch has tried to persuade the other monster hunting families to help them and largely believes it is futile. Blink, however, believes there is still a chance and introduces Enoch to her friend, Wylie, who is struggling with her own Jinoo problem in the form of the Guizi. The two aid Wylie in her fight and along the way gain themselves an ally.
